Given the current hue & cry over the state of the US on the eve of its semiquincentennial, I found this quote from John McCarthy, the inventor of LISP, interesting, given that it was uttered in 1978: "I should say that was when the country still had some basic trust in the judgment of scientists as to what science was likely to be useful…" He was discussing the origins of the language at the 1978 ACM SIGPLAN History of Programming Languages.
